Selecting a name for your web page

The first step on your journey to creating a web page is coming up with a name. How do you know what names are available? How do you find a good domain name if your first choice is taken?

One of the best web pages that I have found to help in your selection process is www.pcnames.com. As you start typing each letter of the name you have chosen, you automatically see whether that combination that you have typed is registered as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz and .us:

For more options, use www.pcnames.com/search to use part of the name you want, and it will generate domain names that are available. You can even refine your search by .com and .net only. Also, by selecting the advanced option, the domain names displayed will only start with or end with the text in the selection box:

What are you waiting for? Go see if that domain name that you want is available.

My first post!

Everyone and their mother has a blog these days. I am not one of these "Type A" personalities, so what can I blog about? Blogging is about sharing, so what can I share that would be interesting to other people?

I thought about the topics that would come up frequently in conversations. The one topic that came up a lot was the frustration in setting up a web page. Whether it was the cost, the lack of knowledge of who to ask, or whatever else, it seemed like an impossible task for most people.

It should not be that difficult, right? Well, we will see. This blog will document my journey in trying to create a web page from the point of view of someone without programming skills.

To start, I will share my experiences of registering a domain name, using free tools and software to set up a professional looking web page/site, and hosting it for free until you start getting some real traffic, and maybe even how to make some money from it.

Let me know what you think, and share your experiences as well.
